During the cooling process your air conditioner provides, condensation is a natural byproduct. Because of the dry air holding less heat energy and to efficiently allow the air conditioning to perform the cooling process, humidity extraction is a primary segment of the treatment. This step produces the condensation rapidly when the heat is pulled from the air after the blower extracts warm air out through the evaporator coils. A pan found under the coils leads to a drain that feeds into a line that connects into the sewer where the condensation produced from the process described earlier, drips down and is contained in the pan. Though it is not a common occurrence, the drainage system can potentially experience some problems such as damaging leaks, mold growth, and obstructions which then in turn causes overflowing, contributing to poor indoor air quality, and even result in the air conditioner to shutoff. Drainage systems that are experiencing leakage and overflows will often develop into additional problems. The area where the evaporator coils are located is a perfect environment for algae, mildew and mold because that is the initial place where the condensation is collected. Creating a moist and warm environment; forms of biological growth that has migrated to the drain line or the drain trap will cause blockage to the drains. The U-trap found under the kitchen or bathroom sink, is similar to the U-trap in the drain line just outside the air handler to cycle the condensation. The U-trap prevents the sewer gases from reaching the air handler through the drain pipe. If the sewer gases erupt the first thing that occurs is the dry condensate drain trap detects noxious odors that have emitted from air conditioner supply vents which then is then past into the building. Blocked drains will cause the pan to dishevel or overflow, causing more water damage. Additionally if the pan is damaged or missing, it will result in water leakage; causing costly damages to the structure.

Moldy Air Conditioning Drain Line Leads to Poor Indoor Air Quality

Mold spores are more common occurrence than you might suppose. Being microscopic, you can have mold spores settled in all over the interior and exterior of your home which is then introduced into the air duct system; allowing them to connect virtually anywhere, including within your air conditioning unit, next to the evaporator coils and condensate drains. Mold spores will mature into mold under the right conditions; usually needing dark, warm, moist areas and a food supply such as dust. Under the right conditions mold can grow quickly and in the drainage system, mold will flourish, leading to harmful toxins being released in the air. After long term exposure people, mold can become ill and especially those with asthma or allergies.
