Basics of HVAC System Components in Henderson, NV; Evaporator Coils, Refrigerant Lines & More

An efficient HVAC system is vital to the comfort of your family throughout the seasons of the year, especially the hot summers we experience in the Vegas Valley. In an effort to keep our valued customers better informed, we have prepared this quick outline as to the essential components of your HVAC system and the role each part plays in ensuring your indoor comfort. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning strives to keep your household and its members warm in winter and cool in our scorching summers.

Thermostat

The thermostat is the component inside the home or building which has many functions. One is reading the changes in the inside temperatures and activating the HVAC unit to either heat or cools the interior air if a change has been detected. This component provides the residents the control of their interior temperatures. The thermostat is the first component that is easily understood by everyone.

Furnace

The furnace is the largest component of the HVAC system and requires the most room. Typically the furnace is either in the cellar, the basement or the attic unless the building designers created a closet just for the furnace. The job of the furnace is to warm the interior of the home or building by using natural gas, electricity, propane, and sometimes, even coal.

Heat Exchangers

The heat exchangers are the component that is activated when the thermostat detects a negative change in the interior of the building or house. The heat exchanger is a component within the furnace itself. Once the thermostat detects the drop in temperature, the heat exchanger then pulls the cooler air into the furnace and then pushes the warmer air created by the furnace out. This system helps circulate the warmer air during the colder seasons.

Evaporator Coils

The Evaporator coils are the component that helps to cool down the air when the thermostat detects a rise in the interior temperature. The evaporator coils are connected to the condensing unit which helps transform the hot air into cool air. The cooler air is then circulated throughout the building or home. The evaporator coils are connected to the condensing unit which is located in front of the furnace but is still within the total casing.

Condensing Unit

Again the condensing unit is connected to the evaporator coils which are installed on the outside of the home and not within the furnace’s casing. The condensing unit is the component that houses the refrigerant or coolant which is used to cool the hot air.

Refrigerant Lines

The lines that transfer the coolant to the evaporator coils are the refrigerant lines. These lines are made of either copper or aluminum tubing.

Ductwork

The ductwork, also called air ducts is a component of the HVAC system that directs and passes the cool or warmed air. As your HVAC unit creates the warm or cold air, it is then blown or pushed through the ductwork into various rooms of the home or building. It is critical that the ductwork is installed correctly and without leaks for full efficiency of the HVAC unit. The duct work is passage ways made of aluminum, fiberglass, fabric, or flexible plastic.

Vents

Finally, the vent is the attaching component of the air duct that is visible inside the building or home. The vent’s purpose isn’t just for esthetics but also to direct which way the air flows into the room. The vent is most commonly located on the ceiling but it can also be found on the floor or side of the walls.
