However, when you are faced with problems with your heating system, it may be something that you can fix without calling out the pros. Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning is here to walk you through some troubleshooting that can be helpful in getting your furnace up and running again without our help.

Start With Your Thermostat

When your furnace isn’t working properly, one of the very first things that you should be checking is the thermostat. This is often on the wrong setting and can cause problems. You should make sure that your thermostat is set to heat and that the temperature is set right as well. If your thermostat isn’t powering on, this could be the source of your problem as well.

Check HVAC Circuit Breaker

Another common problem that can issues with your furnace is the circuit breaker. If your breaker has been tripped, this means that there was some sort of power surge that make it trip to protect your home. Sometimes, all it takes is resetting that breaker and your heat will be up and running again.

Replace Air Filter

If your furnace isn’t getting the airflow that it needs to run properly, it can cause it to overheat and not work right. You should perhaps try changing out your filter to one that isn’t quite as efficient and allows more air to get to your furnace. You should be changing your filter every month or two throughout the year.

Check Furnace Door is Shut

The door on your furnace has to be shut completely for the furnace to be able to fire up as well. If the door isn’t shut tight, there is a switch that will not be pressed in completely and won’t allow the furnace to operate for safety reasons.

Make Sure the Furnace Switch is On

For most furnaces, there should be a switch that is found on the outside of the unit that looks an awful lot like a light switch. This needs to be in the on position or your furnace is shut off. Sometimes, this switch can be shut off when maintenance is being performed and can fail to get turned back on when maintenance is done.

Check to Be Sure Furnace is Getting Gas

If you have a furnace that works by burning natural gas, you need to ensure it is getting the fuel it needs to run. Checking the gas line that delivers the natural gas is your next step. There is a valve on this line that leads to your furnace, and you need to make sure that it is open so gas is flowing into the furnace.
