HVAC Basics

First off, for those who aren’t in “the know”, HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning. A great analogy for describing how your HVAC system works is very much like describing the human respiratory system. Much like breathing, our HVAC systems control the air flow throughout the building at your determined temperatures at the same time. Energy assists in that endeavor, with the appropriate moving parts. Energy is consumed which then transfers it to warm air or cool air, that then gets pushed through the ventilation with the use of fans that also are supported with energy. Air or water, is either heated, using a heating source, or cooled using a refrigerant. The now cooled or heated air is pushed through your ductwork, which is then released through the vents, traveling throughout the building. At that point the airflow is redirected back to the source and the cycle continues to keep your home or business in preferred temperatures. The top quality ventilation is engineered to freshen air, trap small particles of debris, along with toxins, such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Home Heating Specifics

For heating, it may be direct or forced air. In direct systems, the heat is taken from an area using either hydronic method (steam or hot water), or electric radiant floor systems, with baseboards or radiators. With the forced air systems, heat is generated by the use of a furnace by using either electricity or gas. After it has become heated, it is then pushed throughout the building’s structure by the aid of fans. The forced air heating method relies on a return of that cool air back to the furnace. In so doing, the forced air systems have two sets of ducts and outlets. One set circulates hot air and the other has vents on or near the floor to send the sinking cooler air back to the furnace. Heat is also created by the heat pump or also known as the heat exchanger. This method is more efficient production of heat. It uses compression and condensation to draw heat out of air in cool weather.

Cooling Air Conditioning Basics

The more traditional air conditioning units have a compressor and conductor that courses cool refrigerant to a box, referred to as the air handler, distributing the air through the ventilation system. Fans are also used to push the cooler air throughout the duct systems.
