Check if Thermostat is Working
If you have a digital thermostat, confirm that the thermostat is turned on. If the thermostat is blank, move on to the next tip to ensure that the unit is getting power. If you do have power, check for a battery on your thermostat and if you find one, change it out for a new battery.
How Do I Know if My HVAC System is Getting Power?
Although it can seem really obvious, make sure your system has power! There are two locations where power can be disrupted: the breaker panel and the disconnect switch. Make sure that the breaker has not tripped and that the disconnect switch is in the on position (the disconnect switch is located near the indoor unit and it looks just like an everyday normal light switch).
Change or Clean Dirty Air Filters
Your forced air heating or air conditioning system depends on proper airflow being circulated throughout your system. A dirty filter can severely restrict that airflow. As your filter gets dirty, the efficiency and performance of your system drops (and the cost goes up). When the system performance declines to a certain level, your system can stop functioning completely! Check your filter and if dirty, install a replacement immediately.
Return Air Vents Should Not Be Blocked
Ensure that nothing is blocking any of your return grilles. Often furniture re-arrangements block return grilles which in turn blocks airflow which negatively affects efficiency and performance. If enough blockage has occurred, the whole system can stop working entirely.
Should Return Air Vents Be Open or Closed?
Are more than 10% of the supply registers closed or blocked? Most systems only allow 10% of your registers to be closed. If you closed some supply registers trying to force more air to a different area of the house, you could be negatively affecting the system by blocking airflow.
