Now that the evening temperatures are cooling down into the 60’s you will want to adjust your thermostats down during the night to help reduce the need to use excess heat. Here in Southern Nevada our evenings are reaching the low 60’s, yet the days are still around the mid 80’s, so we full haven’t switched to heating yet. However you can adjust your thermostats to match our current weather. You even can adjust your thermostats so they don’t kick on at night. Having your day time thermostat set between 75 to 79 degrees is now extremely comfortable.

Inspect Home Insulation

Now is the time to prepare to help save money during winter and even fall. One way to help save money is to inspect your home insulation. Make sure that the insulation in your attic walls (and for those few who have basements) is still in good condition. For older homes the insulation may not have a high R-value (thermal resistance). If you want to save more money all year long, you may want to replace your insulation.

Check for Air Leaks

Next, to help save money on your energy this winter, inspect your air ducts and seal any separations or holes where the air could be escaping instead of circulating through your house. It’s best to hire a professional to complete this task. Additionally you should also check and seal windows, and external doorways. You may need to replace weather stripping or use caulking glue to seal the cracks or gaps. For homes with fire places make sure the flue is locked and sealed when not in use. Especially here in Southern Nevada, the temperatures are becoming more comfortable which is a sign to begin preparing your heating system for the upcoming winter.
