The Burning Man Festival is an event that takes place annually in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada, starting the last Monday of August and ending the first Monday of September. Each year a giant man figure is constructed out of wood and set on fire. The burning man has increased in height almost every year of the event. In 1986, the first burning man was eight feet tall and last year, in 2014, the burning man was one hundred and five feet tall. The Burning Man Festival is an event that invites all to come and participate, excluding no one and creating an environment where self expression and creative art is encouraged. The Burning Man event has a guideline of ten principals that are followed; these include radical inclusion, gifting, deco modification, radical self reliance, and radical self expression, and communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation and immediacy. The festival allows participants to show their creativity and promotes the idea of complete self reliance. Due to the event’s harsh environment and remote location, participants are expected to be responsible for their own subsistence.
Overheating Concerns at the Hot Burning Man Festival
Attendees of the Burning Man Festival are exposed to the harsh desert environment and must find ways to avoid overheating. It is important for participants to stay out of the sun’s rays, this can be easily accomplished by simply wearing a type of head cover or hat. Keeping in the shade during the day time also helps participants keep cool and avoid any risk of heat stroke. Tents and canopies are brought in by attendees each year that provide an escape from the sun. Staying hydrated is extremely important, so having an ample water source and supply is essential to having a positive experience at the Burning Man Festival.
Air Conditioning, Refrigerators and Flush Toilets Demanded at Festival
The Black Rock Desert is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management, and they have very strict requirements for the event that takes place every year. When the event has ended, the trash must be completely cleaned up, any burn scars on the ground must be properly removed and the area must look like the event never even happened. The BLM has requested that a facility be built nearby for its 160 agency employees to have a retreat to keep cool, hydrated and rested for the duration of the event so they are fully capable of assisting in keeping the Burning Man Festival safe and within the guidelines for all the participants. They are demanding a separate compound with amenities such as air conditioning, refrigerators, flush toilets and couches. It is estimated that building and operating this facility would cost about $1 mission (this includes their meal and snack requirements that include Hot Pockets, M&Ms and Chabani Greek yogurt). Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid sent a letter to BLM Officials telling them to suck it up and get used to living in the great outdoors during the event!
