Are you sick of rising energy costs and looking for ways to reduce your home heating bills while improving the energy efficiency of your home? If so, Air Supply Heating and Air Conditioning has some tips and ideas for you!

How Do You Keep Your Heating & Energy Costs Down in the Winter?

1. Purchase a Programmable Thermostat. A programmable thermostat is one of the easiest and most effective ways to save money on heating costs. You can pre-set your desired temperatures for different times of the day. For example, it is a great idea to set your thermostat to:
– Kick on about 30 minutes before you wake up in the morning. This will make your home toasty warm as your family gets ready for the day ahead.
– Kick off or at least lower the temperature about 30 minutes after everyone leaves for the day. Keeping your home at a lower temperature when no one is home can save hundreds of dollars a year!
2. Hire an HVAC Professional. Sediment build-up, dusty or poorly lubricated fans and loose fan belts can add hundreds to your heating costs each year. Contact a professional heating contractor like Air Supply Heating and Air Conditioning for a tune-up of your heating system. We can also make your system even more efficient by sealing ductwork to prevent heated air from leaking into your attic and crawl spaces.
3. Add Insulation. The Department of Energy says you can reduce heating and cooling needs by 30 percent just be adding a few hundred dollars of insulation; especially if your house is more than 25 years old. Insulation minimizes heat transfer in both winter and summer, provides ventilation to control moisture and makes your home more livable.
4. Set your Water Heater to a Lower Temperature. Heating water is typically 25% of your monthly energy bill! A setting of 120 degrees on your hot water heater will generate considerable savings without compromising those hot showers we all love in the winter.
5. Seal up Gaps in your Windows and Doors. You may be surprised by how much cold air gets in and how much heated air escapes your home through electrical outlets, windows, doors and duct work. Be sure to check the following:
– Weather-stripping. And be sure to caulk any doors and windows that have air leaks.
– Check your homes duct work, plumbing and electrical wiring that penetrates through ceilings, floors and exterior walls. Caulk those areas or wrap with insulation to prevent air leaks.
– To prevent the escape of heated air and the entry of cold air from outside, place child protective covers on electrical outlets or install rubber gaskets behind switch plates.
6. Use your Ceiling Fans. Ceiling fans have a switch on them that allows you to reverse
the direction that the blades turn. In the winter season, set your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise. Hot air rises and the clockwise rotation of the ceiling fan will push warm air that rises to the ceiling down your walls. This creates a warm, comfortable airflow in your home even at lower thermostat settings.
