Furnace Short Cycling Due to Overheating

Most modern furnaces will short cycle due to overheating. This is a safety feature for most modern furnaces. A furnace will shut itself down before it finishes heating the inside of a home if the unit begins to overheat. If the furnace continues to overheat certain components will break and some can lead to serious safety concerns for the entire home. There are certain triggers that might need correcting. If a furnace shuts down prematurely, it is often due to overheating. When a furnace overheats it will shut down to protect the components. Before this safety feature was added to modern furnaces, overheating often caused the heat exchangers to crack. If there was a crack in the heat exchanger, carbon monoxide would leak into the home which can cause fires. If the furnace has been overheating which in turn leads to short cycling, check the filters. Restricted air flow can cause the furnace to overheat. Also check the exhaust vent in the interior areas of the home and on the roof. The same problem can occur if the exhaust vents are obstructed or blocked.

New Furnace Short Cycling

If the furnace has had a history of short cycling after installation or a new furnace is at once short cycling it could be due to the unit’s size. If a furnace that was installed is too powerful for the space or size of your home, this too can create short cycling problems. Many homeowners assume if they get a bigger unit it will cost less to heat their home. An oversized unit can actually cause more problems than it does good. When a unit is too large, it can heat unevenly throughout the home making the furnace activate in short intervals which leads to overheating of the furnace. This triggers the short cycling. Not only does an oversized unit work harder due to the frequent intervals, it wears down the HVAC fans quicker as well as cause expensive repairs.

Thermostat Malfunctions

If none of these problems are present and you’re experiencing short cycling, the last cause can be due to thermostat malfunctions. Sometimes if the thermostat is malfunctioning, it can be sending the wrong signal to your furnace such as telling it to turn off. Check your thermostat battery and unit for wiring damages. You may also want to consider replacing the thermostat to correct the problem.
