Do you have problems getting your furnace to evenly heat your home? It can be quite frustrating to find there are cold spots throughout your home when the heat is running. There are some common causes for this issue and Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning is here to talk about them.

House Hot Upstairs & Cold Downstairs? Home Layout Plays a Role in Uneven Heating

Depending on the way your house is laid out, you may have a harder time keeping the home evenly heated. If you have a two story house, you will be likely be colder while downstairs than upstairs. From an early age, you are taught that heat rises, and that is definitely the case with your home. When you have multiple levels, the higher levels will always be cooler than the lower levels. It can be somewhat fixed by having two separate systems, one for upstairs and one for downstairs to keep the areas in your home heated more evenly. You can also turn the fan to the ON setting rather than the AUTO setting to help with this issue.

Low Airflow Through Vents Causes Uneven Heating

If you have a bigger problem than the levels of your home heating being slightly different in temperature, and have certain rooms in your house that don’t seem to ever get warm, or end up being too warm, airflow might be the problem.
• Ductwork Issues– If there is any blockage in your ductwork, your system won’t be getting the proper airflow it takes to evenly heat your home. The ductwork needs to be cleaned and maintained to ensure proper air flow in your ducts. Also, you may have ductwork that was disconnected for renovations and that can be the cause of uneven heating. Ductwork is a very important part of your HVAC system, and if they aren’t the right size, it can disrupt the way the system works and cause problems.
• Dirty Filters– Your filter should be changed regularly to not only improve the quality of the air in your home, but to keep your system working properly. If there is any restriction to the airflow, you home won’t be evenly heated.
• Blocked or Closed Registers– If you walk into the room and it feel unusually cold, one of the first things you should check should be the registers. If there is furniture or any other belongings on top of it, this will not allow the warm air to fill the room. Always check to make sure the registers are open as well when you have rooms that seem colder than normal.

How Many Return Vents Do I Need?

The way your HVAC system works is by blowing the air out and returning the air through a different vent to cycle it through again. If you don’t have enough of these return vents in your home, your system can’t work as fluidly. You need to have several return vents for the system to heat and cool your home evenly. At Air Supply Heating & Air Conditioning, we can advise you as to the number and best placement of your return air vents.
