What Does a Failing Furnace Sound Like?

When you turn your furnace on for the first time, you want to pay close attention to how it sounds. There are some sounds that you simply don’t want to hear as your furnace turns on to work.
– Rattling: You don’t want to hear any rattling when your furnace turns on. It usually means that there are some loose parts somewhere in your furnace that needs attention. If things aren’t tightened up, you could end up with a bigger problem on your hands.
– Screeching: Most of the time, if you hear a screeching noise when your furnace is on, there is likely a belt issue. It can also be caused by metal on metal caused by the motor bearings.
– Clicking: It isn’t uncommon to hear an initial click when your furnace is first starting, but your shouldn’t hear it throughout a heating cycle. If you do, it means that there is an issue. It often is caused by thermostat connection problems or issues with the heating elements in the furnace.
– Buzzing: Sometimes, when there is an electrical issue with your furnace, it can create a buzzing sound to come from the furnace. It can also mean that you have leaky ducts as well.
– Short Cycling: When your furnace turns on, you shouldn’t hear it shut off shortly after. This means that your furnace isn’t staying on for a full heat cycle. This is known as short cycling. It can be incredibly hard on your furnace and impact its longevity. It can cause higher electric bills as well.
– Booming: This is usually a sound that happens when the gas builds up before igniting. It can be incredibly dangerous as it creates a small explosion.
