Winter Heating Energy Saving Tips Homes, Apartments & Businesses

Expect a Higher Level of Service

When you think of Las Vegas, gambling, casinos, night life and scorching temperatures come to mind. Only the locals know that winter nights have the potential to create cold days. Where Las Vegan natives don’t experience blizzards or even a whole lot of snow fall, it doesn’t mean we can’t feel the frigid cold air from time to time. So how can we save energy and cost during the winter months? Air Supply Heating and Air Conditioning would like to share some tips to save you money on your heating costs this winter.

How Can I Make My Heating Bill Cheaper?

1. Chimney. Not many Las Vegas homes come equipped with a fireplace and chimney, but for those that do, you need to make sure to keep the damper closed when not in use. This will help trap heat and keep it from escaping through the chimney.

2. Air leaks. Consider the cracks, gaps, crevices in windows and doors, plumbing and wiring holes or gaps that can be found all around your home. A lot of warm air is being lost, causing your furnace to keep pumping to sustain the warm temperatures. Install window and door weather stripping. Use caulk or expanding foam accordingly to fill in the holes, cracks and gaps. Make sure your home is properly sealed to prevent the warm air from escaping, and allowing the cold air in.

3. Furnace tune-ups and maintenance. Flickering pilot lots, soot debris, dust build up, loose fan belts and any other additional problems are making your furnace work overtime. If everything is functioning properly, your furnace is working smoothly and efficiently, and not expecting time and half for overtime duties. Ensuring your furnace is adequate can not only save energy on your bill, but it will extend the life of your furnace and keep you from shelling out more money for a replacement furnace prematurely.

4. Attic insulation. There are many folks that would be surprised to learn that their attic space is not sufficiently insulated. Having adequate insulation in crawl space, attics and basements (if applicable) are ways to reduce the energy needed to warm up your home, along with lowering your energy bills.

5. Thermostat. Keep your thermostat as low as you can manage being comfortable. When you are asleep add some extra blankets and invest in warm footy-pajamas and crank it down 10 degrees or so. When no one is home put it down 10-15 degrees. If you should be leaving your home for the a few days or more, consider even programming it to even lower temperatures to save energy costs. A programmable thermostat is the best thing to have so you don’t forget to adjust the different temperatures throughout the day.

There are a number of ways you can reduce your energy costs and still keep warm. If your appliances need replacing, get the energy star rating appliances. Consider adjusting water heater temperatures and holiday light application. Avoid long lasting showers, and over use in the dishwasher.
